Dude I think you're just a bad Blitz then. I play Blitz and he's the one I go to when I want to win a game. I get first blood with him more then any other champion.
He's also really hard to kill during laning phase. I'll just pop my haste and run back to my turret when i'm in danger.
Or not. I'll let them chase me to the turret, then when they try and turn back i'll rocket grab them. If they're pushing too hard, that's even better. If they even try and last hit a minion, they're mine. One that minion protecting them dies, i'll be ready to get them, or even go in between minions. He is hands down the best initiator in the game. He can disable and stun a target to initiate like Amumu, but he brings the target to your team instead of you to the enemy team.
His skill shot is actually fairly hard to dodge, and if you launch it at an angle into the middle of the enemy team, it'll probably grab some one. If the tank gets pulled, you can normally disable him enough to kill him before the rest of the team runs in, making the carry an easy target.
Or better yet, if you can snatch a carry, he'll be dead long before the rest of their team can run in to save them, and now they're going in 4v5 with a damage dealer down.
He can tank by CC'ing some one off the carry long enough for them to reposition. He'll make sure you get that ace when a squishy tries to run away too.
His passive is great too, because when he seems like he's about to die everyone can focus him just to find out he actually has around 1.5k hp left due to his mana barrier. Stacking an archangel is awesome too because of the nice AP scaling that his ultimate gets combined with his passives synergy with huge amounts of mana.
He is really hard to use, and doesn't play like any other tank. He can't taunt or force anyone to get away from you, and you're going to want to build some AP too, but he can be deadly if used correctly.
Really though, he's just a tank. He may be the best at initiating in the game, but that's not enough to carry a game, it's just enough to slant a team fight to your favor. His farming is weak, and his skillshot is slow. He has a very high learning curve and I think he's extremely powerful when used correctly. I think you just see too many bad Blitzcranks that try and go AD or something.

How do you want to play your Blitzcrank?
a) Do you want him to be in the midst of a battle, beating the **** out of your opponents with your 'w'?
b) Do you want him to be an initiator who pulls the carries to your team to make them die a horrible death?
c) Do you want him to be the one who runs into the fight, doing 1k to the other team?
a) build AD + a few survivability items
Waltz into the fight and hit everyone with nice AS and dmg.
I would not recommend this though, other heroes do this better.
b) stack movement speed + Trinity force + armor/mana items
Run around like a Blitz and when the opportunity arises say hi to Tristana, Ryze or whomever dared to stand around for you to grab.
As you can read between my lines, I like this one the most. Since Rocket Grab is really an ability unique to blitz.
With the 5MS boots + 'w' + trinity force you run around the map faster than others can bluepill. NO hero will get away since your chasing abilities are superior. Not even ghost will outrun you.
c) Stack AP items + survivability + lichbane to do some crazy numbers, but I still think other casters are better suited to this role.

You have been given the rocket grab, utilize this.
But I am really not the best Blitz around and I don't play him in ranked. So take this advice with a grain of salt.
